UNWTO Best Tourism Villages 2023: Call for Entries

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has announced the third edition of its Best Tourism Villages recognition award for 2023. This initiative is aimed at identifying and rewarding rural destinations that are committed to promoting tourism as a source of opportunity and well-being.

To be eligible for the prize, villages must demonstrate a commitment to preserving the natural environment, culture, and community-based values, as well as innovation and sustainability. According to the UNWTO Secretary-General, Zurab Pololikashvili, tourism can make a real difference for rural communities by providing jobs, supporting businesses, and celebrating and protecting traditions.

Winners of the UNWTO Best Tourism Villages will receive not only the prestigious title but also the opportunity to join the Best Tourism Villages UNWTO Network. This network comprises over 100 villages from more than 40 countries in five world regions, providing a platform for exchanging experiences, sharing best practices, and identifying opportunities for growth.

Villages that do not receive the recognition can still benefit from the Best Tourism Village UNWTO Upgrade Programme. This programme provides support from UNWTO and its partners to address the gaps identified in the evaluation process.

Applications for the award will be evaluated by an independent International Advisory Board consisting of experts in various fields, including cultural and natural resources preservation, sustainability, tourism product development, marketing, and value chain integration. The evaluation will focus on nine areas, including sustainability, infrastructure, connectivity, and tourism value chain integration.
