Germany’s Nationwide Strike Disrupts Flights and Trains, Paralyzing Europe’s Biggest Economy

A “mega-strike” by two major transport unions in Germany is causing major disruptions across the country’s airports, public transport, and its largest port. Long-distance rail services and early morning regional and commuter rail services have been suspended across Germany. More than 400,000 transport workers are participating in the strike, demanding a 10.5% pay raise due to the rising costs of energy and food.

The strikes have affected flights at eight major airports, including those in Munich, Frankfurt, and Hamburg. The German Airports Association estimates that around 380,000 travelers will be unable to take off on Monday alone. In addition, Munich Airport has closed its doors entirely, leaving 200,000 passengers stranded over the two-day closure that began on Sunday.

Local transport operator MVV has announced the suspension of almost all rail, underground, and tram lines in Munich, and only half of all scheduled bus services are expected to run. Germany’s largest port in Hamburg has also been hit by the strike, with large ships unable to call at or depart from the port.

While some German employers have criticized the strikes, the majority of Germans are supportive of the walkouts, with a recent YouGov poll indicating that 55% of respondents considered the strikes to be “rather” or “fully” justified.

The nationwide strike in Germany is causing significant disruptions to flights, trains, and the economy. Despite criticism from some employers, the majority of Germans support the strike, and it is yet to be seen how long the industrial action will continue.
