The Catholic Bishop of Yola Diocese, Rev. Stephen Mamza on Tuesday, presented 93 wheelchairs to physically challenged people in Yola, Adamawa.
Mamza, is the immediate past chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Adamawa chapter.
He said during the presentation that the gesture was possible through support from members of Knights of Columbus in the U.S.
According to him, the Knights of Columbus is a charity organisation in the Catholic Church in the U.S.
“Two years ago, one of their members was here and I expressed the need for the wheelchairs and since then, they took note of my request and promised that they will send the wheelchairs.
“By the grace of God, they were able to fulfil that promise by sending 93 wheelchairs to the diocese of for distribution to the physically challenged,” he said.
According to him, those who were not at the distribution point due to their conditions would receive the wheelchairs at their homes.
“We have hundreds of such people in Adamawa who cannot afford to have the wheelchairs; these wheelchairs are good, simple, comfortable and durable.
“They are also convenient because you can fold them and board a vehicle with them,’’ he said.
Mamza called on government and wealthy Nigerians to emulate the donors and impact positively on the lives of physically challenged people.
Mr John Anthony, Assistant Secretary, Persons Leaving with Disabilities, Adamawa chapter, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, appreciated the church for the gesture. (NAN)
