The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has confirmed the abduction of seven farmers in Itaogbolu, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The State Commander of Amotekun, Mr. Adetunji Adeleye, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview on Monday, stating that the victims were kidnapped on Saturday.
“I can confirm the incident. Our men have been in the forests and are still there.
I was there yesterday (Sunday), and we are hopeful that they will soon be rescued,” Adeleye said.
Police Launch Rescue Operation
The Ondo State Police Command has also acknowledged the incident. DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), said an operation is underway to apprehend the kidnappers and rescue the victims.
“Yes, there is a case of kidnapping over the weekend in Itaogbolu.
The police have launched an operation to ensure that those responsible are brought to book.
I cannot confirm the exact number of victims at this time as operations are ongoing,” Ayanlade stated.
N100 Million Ransom Demanded
A source familiar with the case, who requested anonymity, disclosed that the victims were abducted while harvesting palm fruits on their farm.
“They went to the farm on Saturday to harvest palm fruits when they were abducted.
We didn’t hear from them until Sunday evening, when the kidnappers contacted one of the family members, demanding N100 million for their release,” the source said.
Negotiations are reportedly ongoing between the kidnappers and the victims’ families.
Security agencies have assured the public that all efforts are being made to rescue the abductees and apprehend the culprits.
