Nigeria’s security agencies have deployed over 60,000 personnel across Anambra State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the poll, Abayomi Shogunle, has confirmed.
In a statement released by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the police spokesperson in Anambra, Shogunle said the security operation would cover all 5,720 polling units with additional tactical support positioned along local government and state borders.
He said the central command structure had been activated to enhance coordination and rapid response, while the Electoral Offences Desk would track online infractions for investigation and prosecution.
The police chief reaffirmed the ban on local vigilante groups such as Agunechemba from election duties, warning that only federal security agencies were authorised by law to provide protection.
He also prohibited VIPs from moving with armed escorts around polling centres, saying any breach would result in arrests and withdrawal of such personnel.
Shogunle called on political parties and residents to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful and transparent election.
