4 Dead, Dozens Injured In Gombe Road Crash Involving Children

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that four people, including a child, died in a crash on the Cham–Numan Road in Balanga Local Government Area, Gombe State.

The FRSC Sector Commander, Samson Kaura, confirmed the incident on Sunday, stating that 14 children sustained injuries of varying severity, while 20 others escaped unhurt. The vehicle involved was a Toyota Hummer bus.

“The crash occurred around 2 a.m. when a Toyota Hummer travelling from Toro in Bauchi State to Adamawa State, carrying mostly children, lost control along Cham–Numan Road,” Kaura said.

He attributed the accident to excessive speed and overloading, noting that the bus carried 41 passengers, mostly children, although it was designed to hold just 18.

“The children were lapping one another, which increased the risk and contributed to the severity of the crash,” Kaura added.

The bodies of those who died have been deposited at the Primary Health Care Centre in Cham.

Kaura urged drivers to observe traffic regulations, avoid night travel where possible, and prioritise safety over economic gain.

“Life is more important than any economic or other benefit from driving. Travelling at night is riskier, and those attempting to evade enforcement must desist,” he said.
