The 24 schoolgirls abducted from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Science Secondary School (GGCSS) Maga in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State on November 17 have been rescued unhurt after nine days in captivity.
A combined team of soldiers, police officers, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel, vigilantes and local hunters carried out the successful rescue operation.
Speaking at a news conference at the Presidential Lodge in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday evening, the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, announced that the students were rescued in Makwa Forest, Niger State. He was accompanied by the Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris.
Matawalle said the rescue followed a heavy gun battle between the security operatives and the kidnappers. He stressed that no ransom was paid.
“The students were rescued after a fierce exchange of fire with the abductors. No ransom was given,” the minister said.
He added that the girls would undergo medical examination before being reunited with their families. Matawalle commended the security operatives for demonstrating professionalism and bravery in discharging their duties.
In his remarks, Governor Nasir Idris expressed profound gratitude to everyone who supported the efforts that led to the girls’ release. He especially thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Minister of State for Defence, the Progressive Governors’ Forum led by Governor Hope Uzodinma, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
“I have run out of words of appreciation for all those who showed concern and contributed to this successful rescue,” the governor said.
