16 Inmates Escape From Keffi Custodial Centre – NCoS

Authorities in Nigeria have launched a large-scale search after 16 prisoners escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to Nigerian Correctional Service spokesperson Abubakar Umar, the escape followed a violent breach of security at the facility, during which inmates attacked officers on duty and overpowered them. Five members of staff were injured, two of them seriously, and are being treated at a state hospital.

Seven of the escapees have since been recaptured, but nine remain at large. The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident and pledged that any personnel found culpable will face disciplinary measures.

Security agencies have joined forces in the manhunt, with residents urged to remain vigilant and immediately report any sightings of the fugitives.

The NCoS has sought to reassure the public of its commitment to safeguarding all custodial facilities and ensuring that those still at large are brought back into custody.
