What was meant to be a joyful return from a religious convention ended in tragedy for the community of Agwa in Oguta, Imo State, after fifteen members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses lost their lives in a road accident.
The incident occurred at about 6:45 p.m. on Monday in Awomama, when a trailer driving against traffic rammed into the bus carrying the worshippers. Eyewitnesses said the victims were returning from their annual convention in Uli, Anambra State, when the crash happened. All fifteen passengers reportedly died on the spot.
Their remains have been taken to a mortuary, leaving families and neighbours in shock.
Hon. Ifeanyi Nnani, Chairman of Oguta Local Government Area, called the event “a very tragic and sorrowful loss”. In a condolence statement issued through his media aide, Orum Desmond, he said:
“These pathetic incidents have once again reminded the people of Oguta and Agwa of the intense sorrow that has suddenly taken away lives in the past.”
He urged the community to remain united in grief while praying for divine comfort for the families affected.
