12 Dead As Gas Tanker Collides With Bus In Imo State

At least twelve people, including four children, were killed in Imo State on Sunday night when a gas tanker truck travelling against traffic collided with a commuter bus. Eight others were injured.

The accident happened around 9:00 p.m. along the Owerri–Onitsha Road, after Njaba Bridge. According to the police, the bus was transporting members of the Jehovah’s Witness Church from Anambra State to Agwa village in Imo when the collision occurred.

Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, confirmed that the dead have been taken to Ogbaku Mortuary, while survivors are being treated at Divine Hospital, Awo-Omamma. Police and road safety personnel worked overnight to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.

Commissioner of Police Aboki Danjuma described the incident as “tragic” and offered condolences to the bereaved families. He urged motorists to avoid dangerous practices such as driving against traffic, speeding, and ignoring safety regulations.

“These remain the leading causes of fatal road accidents,” Danjuma warned. “All road users must drive responsibly to safeguard lives and property.”

Police said further updates will be provided as the investigation continues and urged members of the public with useful information to contact the nearest police station or call 08148024755 or 08034773600.
